From Rules to Wisdom

When it comes to food, our bodies, and our health, many of us have spent years living by rules.

Rules about what we should eat.
Rules about what we shouldn't eat.
Rules about exercise, weight, calories, and willpower.

Often those rules feel restrictive. Heavy. Exhausting.

And despite our best efforts, they can leave us stuck in familiar cycles of being "on track" and "off track" — succeeding for a while, then feeling as though we've failed.

But God doesn't lead us through rigid rules in the way the world often does.

He leads us with wisdom.

Wisdom is different.

Wisdom is gentle.
Wisdom is personal.
Wisdom takes into account the season you're in, the responsibilities you're carrying, and the unique way God has created you.

Rather than handing us a list of rules to follow, God invites us into a relationship where we can seek His guidance and direction for our daily choices.

That includes our choices around food, movement, rest, self-care, and the stewardship of our bodies.

God's wisdom helps us make choices that truly nourish us — body, spirit, and soul — so that we can live out His purpose for us on earth.

Here are some verses to spend time reflecting on:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault…” (James 1:5)

“The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit…” (James 3:17)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” (Proverbs 3:5–6)

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6)

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

Perhaps take a few moments today to sit with these verses and ask God what He wants to show you.

Where have you been relying on rules?

Where might He be inviting you to seek His wisdom instead?

What would it look like to invite Him more fully into your choices around health, food, and caring for your body?

The good news is that you don't have to figure it all out alone.

He is with you in it all.
