Resurrection Hope - Why are you crying?

In this blog we continue to reflect on the theme of hope that Fitfish Claire spoke to us about during our March 2025 Fitfish Retreat weekend:

Have you ever felt lost, unsure of what comes next, or overwhelmed by grief?

That’s exactly where we find Mary in John Chapter 20.

The disciples are scattered, confused, and uncertain, but Mary remains, longing for Jesus, only to find his body missing.

In her sorrow, she meets someone she assumes is the gardener. But then, with just one word, her name, Jesus transforms everything.

Hope is reborn!

This passage is rich with meaning: Jesus choosing a woman as the first witness of his resurrection, the gentle way he meets Mary in her grief, and the deep truth that real hope is found in the very places we least expect it.

Sometimes, hope looks less like grand miracles and more like a flower breaking through concrete. It’s in the quiet presence of Jesus, who meets us in our sorrow and gently calls our name.

Why are you crying?

Who are you looking for?

These are the questions Jesus asks Mary, and maybe us, too.

Can we be honest about our disappointments and struggles?

Can we let our grief have a place to rest, trusting that Jesus sees, knows, and loves us even in the uncertainty?

If you’re feeling lost, uncertain, or weary, know this:

Jesus is your resurrection hope.

The same power that raised him from the dead is at work in you.

He knows your name. He is calling you to sit with him, to bring your doubts and fears, and to find in him the hope that never fades.
