Why do we eat healthily?
It's a simple question, but I wonder what your first answer would be.
For years, my answer would probably have been:
"To lose weight."
Maybe yours would have been too.
And that's understandable because we've been surrounded by that message for decades.
Eat vegetables to lose weight.
Drink water to lose weight.
Cut back on sugar to lose weight.
Choose healthier meals to lose weight.
But what happens when the scales don't move?
Often, we stop.
Because if weight loss is the only reason we're doing something, it becomes very hard to keep going when we don't see immediate results.
But what if healthy eating was never really about weight loss?
What if it was about health?
I know that sounds obvious, but stay with me!
I don't eat vegetables because I expect them to magically make me slimmer tomorrow.
I eat them because they nourish my body.
I drink water because my body needs it.
I eat fruit because it's packed with goodness.
The weight-loss industry has taught us to see food as a tool for shrinking ourselves.
But God created food to nourish us.
To sustain us.
To be enjoyed.
To fuel us for the work He's called us to do.
When I eat a colourful salad at lunchtime, I'm not thinking:
"I wonder how much weight this will help me lose."
I'm thinking:
"This is helping my body function well."
And strangely enough, when you start thinking like that, healthy choices become easier.
Because they're no longer dependent on the scales.
They're simply acts of care.
A bit like brushing your teeth.
You don't brush your teeth because you expect dramatic overnight results.
You do it because it's part of looking after yourself.
Healthy eating can be like that too.
Not punishment.
Not dieting.
Not restriction.
Just stewardship.
The Bible says:
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)
What a different perspective that gives us.
Not:
"How can I eat to weigh less?"
But:
"How can I eat in a way that honours God and cares for the body He's given me?"
So here's my challenge for you:
The next time you make a healthy choice, don't ask yourself what it might do to the scales.
Ask yourself:
"How is this helping me care for the body God has entrusted to me?"
I think you'll find it changes everything.
