The Thought that Stops You Before You Even Start... and how to Flip It!

Have you ever noticed how one little thought can set off a whole chain reaction in your life?

It’s amazing, really.

Something happens (a circumstance) → you have a thought about it → that thought creates a feeling → that feeling shapes your action → and the action produces a result.

So often, we try to change the action - eating differently, exercising more, being “better.”

But if the thought behind it hasn’t shifted, it’s like sticking a plaster over a deeper wound. The real change happens when we look upstream at our thoughts.

The Bible puts it this way:

“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)

But what does that look like in everyday life?

Imagine this:

Circumstance: You miss your morning exercise.

Thought: “I’ll never get healthy.”

Feeling: Deflated.

Action: You give up for the day.

Result: No progress, just more frustration.

But what if you caught that thought and shifted it?

Circumstance: You miss your morning exercise.

Thought: “Missing once doesn’t define me. I can still make a healthy choice today.”

Feeling: Hopeful.

Action: You go for a walk at lunchtime.

Result: You feel encouraged and proud.

See the difference?

It’s not about forcing yourself to act differently. It’s about letting God renew your mind so your actions naturally flow from healthier thoughts.

So this week, can you catch one unhelpful thought?

Ask: “What am I making this mean?”

Then see if you can swap it for a gentler, more truthful thought, maybe even a scripture.

It might not flip everything overnight, but over time, it’s transformational.
