Do you love walking in through the door to delicious smells, knowing that your meal is sorted? I love how much time a slow-cooker gives you back!
It’s a brilliant way to prepare nourishing meals, without spending hours in the kitchen. I even know some people who take them on holiday with them!
Fun Fact - Did you know the humble slow cooker began its journey as “The Boston Beanery” before eventually being rebranded in the U.S. as the Crock Pot. In the UK, we lovingly stick with the 'slow cooker'!
Here are some slow cooker tips to help you get the most from yours:
1. Layer wisely – Place harder veg (like carrots or squash) at the bottom, and more delicate ones (like peas or peppers) near the top so everything cooks evenly.
2. Use foil packets – To keep veg or fish from going mushy, wrap them in foil and place them on top.
3. Brown meat first – It’s not essential, but browning meat before slow cooking adds a richer flavour. (I don't always do this, but if I've got time, I will)
4. Mind the liquid – You often need less than you think, as slow cookers don’t allow much to evaporate. If you end up with too much, you can drain some off with a spoon or place a teatowel under the lid to absorb some.
5. Avoid lifting the lid – Each peek adds 15–20 mins to cooking time! Trust the process!
6. Use the “Keep Warm” setting – Perfect for busy evenings or serving at different times.
7. Preheat if you can – A 10-minute warm-up helps kickstart even cooking.
8. Use a bouquet garni – Bundle whole herbs and spices in muslin or a tea infuser to save time picking them out later.
9. Finish with fresh herbs or spices – Adding these at the end brightens the whole dish.
10. Play with liquids – Broths, juices, even a splash of wine can bring new depth and joy to your meals.
Whether you’re feeding one, feeding many, or simply want to make life easier this week, your slow cooker is a gift!
So why not dust it off this weekend and cook up something nourishing? Your body, your time, and even your budget will thank you.
