Do you ever put things off even though you know they matter?
Maybe it’s meal planning, exercise, paperwork, sorting a cupboard, booking an appointment, or making a decision you know would help you feel better.
That’s procrastination, delaying something that actually matters to us.
And it's not because we’re lazy.
It’s because we’re trying to avoid pain.
That pain might be boredom, overwhelm, fear of failure, frustration with tech, or just the uncomfortable feeling of starting.
But here’s the thing I’ve noticed again and again:
The pain of procrastinating is often worse than the pain of actually doing the thing.
It sits in the back of your mind.
It nags at you.
It drains your energy.
It makes you feel guilty.
And then, when you finally start, you often realise it wasn’t quite as bad as you thought.
A bit like getting into a cold swimming pool, the faffing about on the edge is often worse than when you're in!
So this week, instead of thinking, “I must sort my whole life out,” try asking:
What is one tiny thing I can start?
Not finish.
Just start.
Could you do 5 minutes of paperwork?
Put your trainers by the door?
Chop some veg ready for tomorrow?
Write one meal idea down?
Send one message?
Book one appointment?
Tiny action breaks the spell of procrastination.
You could also try giving yourself an immediate reward, a cup of tea, a favourite podcast, a walk, or a coffee with a friend once it’s done.
Or add some accountability. Tell someone, “I’m going to do this today,” and let them cheer you on.
One little idea I love is:
Don’t break the chain.
Even if you only do one minute, you’ve still kept going.
Even if it’s tiny, it counts.
Even if it’s imperfect, it matters.
Because small faithful steps really do add up.
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
